C&W has one of the most interesting growth stories in our industry. How has our recent momentum made an impact on your role or created opportunities for you?
I have gained invaluable experience as we worked to harmonize our practices and systems following our recent mergers and acquisitions. The rapid growth and change has challenged me, and has made me a stronger professional, allowing me to quickly advance from an HR Intern to a Generalist in only a few years.
What solution, achievement or moment are you most proud of while either working at Cushman & Wakefield, or in your personal life?
In 2015, I was pregnant, taking grad school courses at night and successfully led the HR onboarding and integration efforts of the Massey Knakal acquisition. I am proud to have been a part of the monumental changes of C&W, and grateful to work for a company that has helped me attain my personal goals.

C&W has one of the most interesting growth stories in our industry. How has our recent momentum made an impact on your role or created opportunities for you?
After the consolidation between DTZ and C&W, we didn’t have a huge impact in Mexico because our team was small. When we became a part of the western region, we saw a surge in growth. Since then, I have increased both my knowledge and network. We now have a strong synergy between both companies, which has resulted in additional opportunities for our clients.
What solution, achievement or moment are you most proud of while either working at Cushman & Wakefield, or in your personal life?
Since being at C&W, my proudest achievement is the number of people and families that are related to the company. We have grown to 500 employees, and have opened up many opportunities for our people and our clients. C&W is not just a business, but a family; a family growing, learning, and evolving.

Personally, I would say my biggest achievement is to serve as the President of Fundación El Peñón, an educational foundation where we sponsor 450 kids from middle school and high school. We have been able to sponsor so many people, which has positively impacted their personal and professional lives.

With the world constantly changing, how has your job, or client’s job changed over the past 10 years?
Over the past 10 years, technological improvements in the Real Estate Valuation Industry have significantly changed my job and how my clients perform their jobs. My role began with developing a state-of-the-art appraisal report writing platform. With the fast-paced developments in technology, we are evaluating more products in this space as opposed to developing solutions in-house. My clients, C&W real estate appraisers, are constantly looking to me to provide solutions to improve overall productivity so that they can deliver their product faster and increase the volume of appraisals performed each year.
Tell us a little about your story. How did you come to C&W? What do you do?
I started with C&W as a consultant with a 5-week contract to develop Excel technology solutions. I was attracted to the entrepreneurial spirit of the organization, and decided to accept a full-time position in 2006. Since then, I was able to climb the corporate ladder and participate on V&A’s Executive Leadership Team.

Why do YOU work here at Cushman & Wakefield and not somewhere else?
I work here because at C&W because I make a difference. My ideas are heard, and my talent is acknowledged. I encounter challenges every day, and receive the support I need to find new solutions and grow professionally and personally.
C&W has one of the most interesting growth stories in our industry. How has our recent momentum made an impact on your role or created opportunities for you?
The company’s growth has afforded me the opportunity to jump in head first and support our team in more ways than one. In my last role, I learned so much from acting as an Operations Coordinator, Project Manager, and Research Analyst. Through trial by fire, I have gained skills that I could not get anywhere else.
What solution, achievement or moment are you most proud of while either working at Cushman & Wakefield, or in your personal life?
Through our organization, Cushman Cares, I was able to lead a team of 12 employees (administrators to senior leadership) in building a swing set on a playground for the children of recovering mothers. With my background in international youth development and non-profit, it is truly invaluable to give back. It means a great deal to work for a company that makes this possible.

Why do YOU work here at Cushman & Wakefield and not somewhere else?
I sold my company to C&W. However, I chose to sell my company to C&W because I really enjoy their culture, which aligned very nicely with my old company’s culture. We had great people, and we joined another  organization with great people.
What solution, achievement or moment are you most proud of while either working at Cushman & Wakefield, or in your personal life?
Professionally, I’m most proud of building a great business with incredible people, and being pursued by nearly every company when we were ready to sell. However, I’m most proud of my incredible children and family.

With the world constantly changing, how has your job, or client’s job changed over the past 10 years?
The broker role has significantly changed over the past 10 years. Today, we are asked to wear numerous hats, (i.e. accountant, lawyer, architect). Customers are looking to us to be a business partner/consultant who understands macro and micro trends as it relates to their business. The definition of the total occupancy costs has changed; it is no longer just intrinsic to rental rate and operating costs. Companies are looking at workplace strategy, workflow, demographics, workforce location, recruitment, and retention in their evaluation of total occupancy costs.
What solution, achievement or moment are you most proud of while either working at Cushman & Wakefield, or in your personal life?
GSA has been a customer for 15 years. I remember my first deal with them, which was a 600 square foot transaction in Chinle, AZ. My most recent one was a 200,000 square foot deal in downtown Dallas. The relationship has really grown.

After 9/11, a new federal agency, TSA was created. I was responsible for opening 40 TSA locations in primary, secondary and tertiary airports, all of which had to be opened in a very short period of time. The work I have done with GSA has been diverse, follows a specific process, and allows me to not only work on interesting deals, but also allows me to feel like I am in some small way helping my country.

Why do YOU work here at Cushman & Wakefield and not somewhere else?
I love the people, the entrepreneurial spirit and the access to great talent and resources. All of theses set us apart from our competitors and enable us to deliver outstanding results for our clients.
What solution, achievement or moment are you most proud of while either working at Cushman & Wakefield, or in your personal life?
In the late 1980s, I represented the Ritz Tower residential cooperative on Park Ave and 57th St in Manhattan in a ground rent reset arbitration. Based on my performance in 1989, they asked me to create some value and raise over $20,000,000 to do some repairs. I re-negotiated the ground lease, bought out 2 retail tenants, created a commercial condo, and then sold the condo to the third retail tenant for $25,000,000. That deal won the Robert Lawrence Award from REBNY for the most ingenious deal of the year.

Tell us a little about your story. How did you come to C&W? What do you do?
After 10+ years on the client side of CRE, I started to look for more exciting ways to contribute. After some research, it was clear to me that C&W was in a growth mode; the company was investing in its tools, platforms, and people. It was an easy decision to come to C&W. I have met so many good people, and have enjoyed working here so much. I can’t imagine what I would be doing if I hadn’t joined C&W.
What solution, achievement or moment are you most proud of while either working at Cushman & Wakefield, or in your personal life?
Clients are listening to us and they are interested in our fresh approach that is more flexible, more focused on the end user, and more adaptable to their changing needs. We are emerging as the “Client-Focused Firm.”

David Shum

Why do YOU work here at Cushman & Wakefield and not somewhere else?
The team atmosphere and client focus within our Valuation & Advisory group is unmatched.
What solution, achievement or moment are you most proud of while either working at Cushman & Wakefield, or in your personal life?
The flexibility within the Cushman & Wakefield work environment allowed me to succeed as President of the Appraisal Institute of Canada in 2012/2013.
